Compost Caravan & Spreader Training

Hop on the Compost Caravan! This Farmer Compost Day event, hosted by the Association of Compost Producers, will feature F3 Local equipment sharing/compost spreading training, on-farm compost workshop, and additional resources. This event is for farmers who are interested in learning more about how compost can support their production goals and want to tap into a larger network of regional farmers and supportive organizations. F3 Local will provide on-site compost spreading training which will allow access to their equipment lending library.

Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm (lunch and refreshments provided)
Location: 7589 De Wolf Avenue, Fowler, CA 93625
Spanish and Hmong translation services will be available.
ALL DAY:
Local Compost Samples: There will be samples of compost provided by regional commercial and agricultural composters, including MidValley Compost, Kochergen Farms Compost, and Biofiltro.
Resource Distribution: Attendees can find multiple resources surrounding compost best-practices, funding opportunities, science of compost, and more.
MORNING (10AM-12:30PM):
Compost Spreading Equipment Demonstration & Training: F3 Local will host a compost spreader training session, where farmers will be then registered to be able to borrow them from their Equipment Lending Library program.
Break Out Discussions: Practitioners in the composting space will share their expertise in an open discussion about the following topics:
F3 Local: Compost application information surrounding spreading equipment, application rates, and more.
Sierra RCD: Information on composting as a CDFA approved healthy soil practice, the role of compost in our soils, benefits of using compost, and funding opportunities for accessing compost + other soil health practices.
Donald Thomas: Ideas on how to manage on-farm organic materials, a discussion around his on-farm composting operation, and lessons learned in the process.
LUNCH BREAK 12:30PM - Food and refreshments provided
AFTERNOON (1:30PM-4PM):
Break Out Discussions: Practitioners in the composting space will share their expertise in an open discussion about the following topics:
Kochergen Farms Composting: Insights to their composting process and what to consider when buying compost from off-farm facilities.
People, Food and Land Foundation: Conversations around policies that impact farmers and what challenges keep folks from thriving.
Large Group Debrief: Open discussion for participants to ask questions to all the professionals present, provide some feedback on the event, and request additional resources.
