Fresno Pacific University Celebrates First Cohort of its Ag Leadership Certificate Program
With support from the F3 Initiative, Fresno Pacific University (FPU) recently celebrated the successful completion of its inaugural Ag Leadership Certificate Program, bringing together 38 participants from diverse educational and professional backgrounds. Held from August 21 through October 2, the seven-week program connected students, working professionals, and aspiring agricultural leaders with some of California’s most influential voices in agriculture. Thanks to funding from F3, anyone with an active student ID from a college or university could participate at no cost, including four students from the F3 AgTEC Workforce program at Clovis Community College.

Through weekly sessions offered both in person and virtually, participants heard directly from agricultural industry leaders, association representatives, and policy experts about the challenges, opportunities, and leadership skills shaping the future of California agriculture. A highlight of the program was an all-expenses-paid trip to Sacramento, where 17 students toured the State Capitol and connected with legislative representatives and agricultural policy leaders (see photos below). The experience offered a firsthand look at how decisions affecting agriculture are made and introduced participants to career pathways they may not have previously considered.
“The response was incredible,” said Linda Thomas Matoian, EdD, Executive Director. “Our participants came from so many different backgrounds, but they all shared a desire to learn and grow. Seeing them return each week, engage with our speakers, and make meaningful connections was extremely rewarding. More importantly, they left knowing they have a voice and a place in the future of agriculture.”
The relationships extended beyond the classroom, with several speakers offering ongoing mentorship and professional connections to participants.
“One of the most impressive parts of the program was how accessible the industry leaders made themselves,” said Brandon Porter, MA, Marketing Specialist. “They weren’t just there to give presentations. They shared their experiences, exchanged contact information, and encouraged students to reach out.”
Building on the success of this first cohort, FPU hopes to offer the Ag Leadership Certificate again in spring 2027, pending additional funding to continue providing scholarships. The university is also exploring future certificate programs focused on agricultural technology, food as medicine, and women in agricultural leadership.
