On Thursday, March 27, F3 Local hosted the first informational session of SF-ADAPT ( Small Farm Alliance to Develop Appropriate Technology). This launch meeting brought together a diverse group of small-scale farmers, engineers, researchers, and ag professionals to begin building a shared vision for more accessible, affordable, and practical technology that meets the real needs of California’s small farms.
The session kicked off a community-driven effort to identify and co-develop technology solutions tailored to the daily realities of small growers in the Central Valley. Together, attendees discussed common equipment challenges, the need for hands-on technical assistance, and how shifting environmental and regulatory pressures are shaping the future of small farms. What emerged was clear: there is an urgent need for farmer-centered innovation that doesn’t leave small producers behind.
The SF-ADAPT model puts small-scale growers at the center of the innovation process by asking them directly what tools they need, what’s missing, and what’s working. With input from farmers, academic institutions like UC Davis and UC Merced, and partner organizations like CAFF, this alliance aims to foster real collaboration that leads to cost-effective, scalable solutions. It’s not just about new gadgets—it’s about empowering farmers to shape the future of ag innovation and sustainability in their own communities.
This is just the beginning. Future SF-ADAPT meetings and workshops will continue to strengthen relationships between farmers and technology developers, while responding to member priorities and emerging opportunities. Watch the recap video below to learn about the alliance and about how you can get involved.
