More than 200 farmers, researchers, students, and ag-tech enthusiasts gathered at UC Merced on December 2 for the 5th Annual Small Farm Tech Expo, a full-day event showcasing hands-on agricultural technologies designed for small-scale farms. Hosted by the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) with support from F3 Local, the Expo is part of an ongoing effort to bridge the gap between technology and small farming operations by spotlighting tools that are appropriate, affordable, and accessible.
“This is an annual event that we put together to bridge the gap between small scale farmers and appropriate technology,” said Maria Ridoutt-Orozco, Small Farm Technology Advisor at CAFF. “We had 14 exhibitors showcasing different equipment today, more than 18 exhibitors showcasing information and resources available, and more than 200 people attending the event. We had a really good mix of people learning about technology that’s accessible for small scale farmers.”
Among the demonstrations was the E2T electric two-wheel tractor by Renewables. Founder Steve Heckeroth has spent over 30 years developing solar-powered alternatives to traditional fossil-fuel equipment. “The E2T is controlled with a little remote control unit, so it’s remarkably easy to operate,” he explained. “It’s affordable, can be powered off of solar energy, and designed for small farms.”
Another featured exhibitor, Gather, showcased their Rover, an AI-powered robotic transport vehicle. “Our first product, the Gather Rover, is a purpose-built vehicle that transports crops and materials on farm and in fields,” said founder Suma Reddy. “We just were awarded a $40,000 innovation grant from F3i that really moves forward our R&D and our technology and our on-farm piloting.” Gather’s focus on simplified, low-cost automation solutions made their tools especially relevant to attendees.
By bringing together students, researchers, government agencies, startups, and seasoned farmers, the Small Farm Tech Expo continues to shape a more equitable and sustainable future for agriculture in California.
