The Central Valley is often described in terms of production—acres planted, crops harvested, and the scale of an agricultural region that feeds millions. But behind those numbers is a more complex story of people, place, and connection.

Central to the Valley is a regional initiative supported by F3 Local, in partnership with CAFF (Community Alliance with Family Farmers). It celebrates the farmers and food of the San Joaquin Valley by sharing farmer stories, elevating the people behind the region’s food system, and helping connect communities with fresh, seasonal, locally grown food.
As part of this work, Central to the Valley has developed the Central to the Valley Buying Guide—a public, searchable resource that helps residents find farms, farmers markets, retailers, and restaurants that source locally grown food across the region.
The Buying Guide is designed to make it easier to identify where food comes from and to support businesses that are part of the Central Valley’s agricultural economy. It brings together local food sources in one place, offering a clearer view of the farms and businesses that keep the region’s food system moving.
The Central Valley produces an extraordinary diversity of food: fruits, vegetables, nuts, dairy, and specialty crops that move from local fields to households across California and beyond. Each crop reflects long-term planning, environmental stewardship, labor, and generational knowledge that shapes how food is grown and delivered.
That food supports local economies while also feeding school districts, hospitals, food banks, restaurants, and national supply chains. Yet for many consumers, the connection between the farm and the final purchase is not always clear.
Central to the Valley was created to help close that gap.
By making these connections more visible, Central to the Valley supports a stronger regional food system rooted in transparency, trust, and shared investment in local agriculture.
