On November 4th, the VINE Connect Field Day brought together ag-tech innovators, industry leaders, and community members at the Kearney Research and Extension Center in Central Fresno. Sponsored by F3 Local, this hands-on event showcased cutting-edge agricultural technologies designed to address one of California’s most pressing challenges: labor shortages in the ag industry. The event featured live technology demonstrations, a tour of the Kearney REC facilities, and remarks from U.S. Congressman Jim Costa and other ag leaders who emphasized the importance of agrifood innovation for the Central Valley.
The participating companies showcased solutions aimed at enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and promoting sustainability:
Aksata Technologies, Inc.: demoed a smart-spreading drone system that precisely sprays crops, reducing waste and boosting crop health.
Amos Power Inc.: demoed an electric autonomous tractor designed to cut down on labor needs and operational costs for vineyards, all while being environmentally friendly.
Bonsai Robotics: demoed their automated almond shaker, designed to harvest more carefully and efficiently, reducing crop damage.
Gather: demoed the Gather Rover, a robotic tool that transports table grapes within vineyard rows, saving time and energy for farmworkers.
RapidAIM Pty Ltd: demoed a pest detection system that monitors pest activity in real-time, helping to reduce pesticide use and better protect crops.
The event’s highlight were the field demonstrations, including the Gather Rover - an autonomous field robot designed to assist farmers by hauling crops efficiently, offering a cost-effective and simple solution compared to traditional robotic systems. Gather’s demo (pictured below) showed how technology can empower farms of all sizes, especially smaller operations, by offering accessible solutions to common labor challenges.
“Affordability and simplicity are at the heart of what we do,” said Suma Reddy, CEO of Gather. “It was exciting to present the Rover to an audience connected to agriculture and innovation. The feedback we received, along with new partnerships formed at VINE Connect, validates the importance of events like this.”
The event also highlighted the role of VINE Connect in bridging the gap between entrepreneurs and farmers. Through a robust ecosystem of collaboration, participants had the chance to network with ag-tech developers, witness practical solutions in action, and explore how emerging technologies can be integrated into local farming practices. Field demonstrations like those at VINE Connect are pivotal in driving awareness, building connections, and advancing solutions that address both regional and global agricultural challenges.
